Update by Mike Schoenberger, Friends of JJ Brennan Park, March 25, 2025
After adopting JJ Brennan Park in 2022, I created a wish list of things to improve around the park. Ideas included improvements to the rusty shipping containers the school uses for storage, fixing up the unused baseball field to be playable, and to enclose the dumpsters next to the playground behind Richland Elementary School.
In 2025, we enclosed the dumpsters! It was a huge team effort involving coordination with Bloom, Inc. to work together to get the principal on board, designs approved by Shelby County Schools, funds secured from our school board member, Mrs. Amber Huett-Garcia, and the Shelby County Commission provided grants with involvement by the Richland Elementary PTO. After months of delays and final approvals, we were lucky to have Brian Ellsworth (a Richland parent) with Willow Brook Solutions, construct an 8 foot tall enclosure around the dumpsters to contain the trash, reduce illegal dumping, and to keep the eye sore hidden while families play at the park.
In 2024, a fellow neighbor and parent, Kimberly Catlin, applied for and received a grant from Dick’s Sporting Goods. She was able to use the grant to make upgrades to the baseball fields including building dugout shelters, adding new dirt & grass, and installing bleachers for spectators. We hosted the first White Station Middle School home game in 5 years! Opening Day Video
In 2023, Margaret McQusiton at Memphis City Beautiful helped me coordinate a volunteer day with FedEx employees who provided expertise and funds to paint the shipping containers. They are now a neutral gray and not so distracting for those enjoying the park.
